It is the policy of the Education Committee to encourage pupils to wear an acceptable form of school dress as determined by Head Teachers, Parent Councils and parents.
In encouraging the wearing of school dress, account must be taken of any proposals to prevent any direct or indirect discrimination on the grounds of race or gender. Any proposal will be the subject of widespread consultation with parents and pupils.
Parents are asked to co-operate with the school in encouraging the wearing of the school uniform.
The Westerton uniform has been agreed in consultation with parents, pupils, staff and the Parent Council. It incorporates a range of popular items of dress, e.g. sweatshirts, T-shirts.
Wearing school uniform contributes to a positive school ethos and helps avoid discrimination and reduces peer pressure to wear expensive designer clothing.
Clothing Grants are available for families to help with the cost of uniforms. The use of recycled uniforms is highly supported. At Westerton Primary School, the PTA and the Parent Council support the school in encouraging the wearing of our school uniform.
Many unbranded items can be purchased in supermarkets and other clothing stores which may help to reduce costs.

PE Uniform
The appropriate clothing and footwear for PE is a polo shirt/T-shirt with shorts or our school tracksuit with trainers/gym shoes with non-marking soles. These are necessary for health and safety reasons and your co-operation is requested to ensure that pupils are equipped to participate in PE lessons. The school tracksuit may be worn on PE days.
Children may attend school on their gym days wearing their PE kit/ PE tracksuit and trainers. Teachers may also request a spare pair of shoes be brought to protect gym equipment.
A school’s reputation can also be enhanced in the local community by the wearing of school uniform and school security will be improved as it will be easier to identify intruders. Please note there is a requirement that all jewellery is removed prior to undertaking physical education activities.
Please ensure that all items of clothing are clearly labelled, particularly ties, sweat shirts and PE kit which are often lost. Offensive clothing such as T-shirts or other items painted with obscene language or illustrations are not permitted. Football colours are also inappropriate as they can lead to incidents of rivalry.
Under no circumstances will pupils be deprived of any educational benefit as a result of not wearing uniform and, in particular, pupils will not be denied access to examinations as a result of not wearing school dress. Parents are asked to assist by ensuring that valuable items and unnecessarily expensive items of clothing are not brought to school.
Approval of any requests for such grants made by parents in different circumstances is at the discretion of the Chief Education Officer.
